“Summer Gi” Vs. “Single Weave Gi” For Kids

Have you ever looked at the IBJJF weight chart for kids and felt confused by the different weights based on gi type? Let us clear up the confusion by looking at the difference between what they call a “Summer Gi” and a “Single Weave Gi”.

The “Summer Gi” is a lighter weight gi that more closely resembles the material of a Karate or Tae Kwon Do uniform. This material is thin and does not have visible weaving of cotton strands. The most common “Summer” gi for kids is made from ripstop material.

The “Single Weave” gi is a little heavier and the most common type of gi you encounter. There is visible weaving of material. When in doubt, read the product’s description to determine the type of material / weave it consists of. The full line of Vulkan Kids’ gis are IBJJF and NABJJF approved and would fall under the “Single Weave” category.
